Beyond Resolutions: Building a Marriage That Blesses Everyone Around You

Today, while driving to work, we passed many people running along the roadside. It reminded me that it’s January — the season of resolutions. I recalled reading somewhere that most New Year’s resolutions focus on finances, health and fitness, and spending more time with family and friends. January often sees people putting these plans into motion, explaining the surge of runners on the road and the packed gyms.

If you make New Year’s resolutions, what’s on your list? While many focus on self-improvement, one resolution that should top the list is doing God’s will. As you consider the various aspects of your life, reflect on how you can align your actions with God’s purpose.

For those called to the vocation of marriage, improving your relationship should be a priority. Strengthening your marriage is not just a personal endeavour; it is part of fulfilling God’s will.

A thriving marriage doesn’t only benefit you and your spouse — it has a ripple effect on your children, relatives, friends, neighbours, and society. For instance, if a marriage suffers from physical abuse, it impacts the children, disrupts the peace of neighbours, and demands the time and energy of friends and family who intervene to help. Conversely, a loving marriage blesses not only the couple but everyone around them.

Cultivating a better marriage requires intentionality. One of the most effective ways to nurture your relationship is being intentional about investing into it. A great investment is spending quality time together. Make time to date each other. What you love or value, you make time for. The goal of this time is connection.

A perfect date isn’t about extravagance or mimicking what you see in movies or on social media. Instead, it’s about doing something that fosters a deeper connection with your spouse. This could be as simple as praying together, taking a walk, sharing a meal, watching a movie, or learning something new together. It doesn’t have to be costly or complicated. Even a quiet evening at home, sipping tea or wine and enjoying a heartfelt conversation, can be incredibly meaningful.

The key is to remove distractions, especially the ever-present phone. Struggling to imagine time without your device? Here are a few ideas: make eye contact, reminisce about a cherished memory, dream together about the future, or play a game that leads to more conversation. The objective is connection — nothing else.
