Many couples approach their wedding day with great excitement—and rightly so. Marriage marks the beginning of a new season, filled with hope, anticipation and countless possibilities of what two people can build and achieve together.
However, while a great deal of time and energy is invested in preparing for the wedding, far less is often invested in preparing for the marriage itself. Many couples reason, “We shall cross that bridge when we get to it.”
But few pause to ask: What kind of bridge will it be? Will it be wooden or steel? Will it be a narrow footbridge or as wide as a dual carriageway? Will we need guidance to cross it? And will we be adequately prepared for the changing seasons of life, the roaring winds, the scorching heat, the silent nights, the thunderstorms and the rain?
When we began dating in 2006, we envisioned a lifelong and thriving relationship. We also understood that such a relationship would not happen by accident; we would have to work intentionally towards it.
We therefore sought knowledge, advice and wisdom from married couples. It was not always an easy search because positive married life was rarely profiled. Much of what we heard and read focused on marital problems, with far fewer stories showing that marriage could also be joyful, fulfilling and deeply enriching.
Before and throughout our marriage, we intentionally sought out couples from whom we could learn. We also invested in books, seminars, retreats and other marriage-enrichment spaces. As we applied what we learnt, we discovered that, contrary to the overwhelmingly negative stories around us, marriage could be a beautiful and enjoyable journey not because it was free from challenges, but because we were learning how to face life and grow together.
Four years into our marriage, we felt compelled to share what we were learning and experiencing, beginning with our friends. We wanted other couples to know that marriage is beautiful, that healthy relationships can be learnt and that couples can thrive when they are intentional. We took this desire into prayer, and God faithfully opened the way.
In 2014, with the support of generous friends and well-wishers, we organised our first Couples’ Getaway. What began as one gathering steadily grew. Over the years, more couples joined us, and we began receiving testimonies of renewed connection, better communication and positive transformation in marriages.
The gatherings opened up deeper conversations about intimacy, family finances, parenting, communication, balancing work and family, faith, purpose and many other realities of married life. Couples and individuals also began reaching out to us for more personal support, while churches, organisations and other groups invited us to speak and facilitate conversations about marriage.
In February 2022, we felt convicted to do more and to give this growing mission an identity. After prayer and soul-searching, the name Regina Familiae, shortened to ReFa, was born. Regina Familiae is Latin for Queen of the Family, one of the titles given to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The name reflected our Catholic faith and our conviction that Mother Mary continually intercedes for families.
In 2024, after a decade of serving couples, we dared to dream bigger once again. We revisited our vision, clarified our mission and reflected deeply on the people we were called to serve. From that process, The Couple Binders was born.
Our focus became clearer: at the heart of every family is the couple. When the relationship between the spouses is strengthened, the positive impact extends to their children, their wider families, the Church and society.
While ReFa remains part of our story and we continue to seek the intercession of Mary, Queen of the Family, The Couple Binders expresses the wider mission we now carry: resourcing couples to thrive.
Today, we create spaces where couples and individuals can learn, reflect, have honest conversations, acquire practical relationship skills and receive support for the different seasons of life. Our desire is to contribute to Christ-centred, purpose-driven marriages that thrive in love and inspire others to do the same.
